CRUISE Day 13 – Wednesday, July 31st

We left Islamorada at 11:15 am
and headed off to Hawk Cay Resort on Duck Key. Out into the Atlantic and the water is like glass – but the weather is very, very HOT! It was so calm you could see bottom at a 15’ depth. Salty’s funny, really, there are times he gets so hot it worries me the way he pants so hard and then the next thing you see him lying in the full sun on deck (on purpose) at 1:00 pm in the afternoon! Duck Key is not far from Islamorada so we took our time and putted along watching the Keys and bridges go by. We arrived at Hawk Cay Resort around 2:00 pm and were ready for “pool time”… so we made like tourists and went to sit by the pool – not in the pool because it was like bath water. We didn’t last long there and went back to the boat to cool off in our little air conditioned cabin, which was a good thing because the weather kicked up and we had strong winds and rain blow in rather quickly. We had to hurry and adjust the lines so the boat wasn’t crashing up against the dock, but managed to batten down the hatches and secure the lines well enough to relax below before dinner. They had a wonderful restaurant at the main dock and we had another great dinner with leftovers for Salty of course!

Marina Day - Thursday, August 1st we are still at Hawk Cay Resort and there are quite a few roomy places for Salty to run – much more so than the other Marinas. It was so hot today; we didn’t do much of anything – even going for a walk on the dock proved stifling. We tried to find a spot for Salty to go into the water, which we were told would be the boat ramp area if it weren’t too busy. The dock was so hot that poor ole Salty had to run for cover and climb up on the little base that held the gas pump – not much shade cast from a gas pump, but it did until his paws cooled off. If I could have taken off my sandals and strapped them onto him, I would have. Needless to say, we didn’t go to the boat ramp and didn’t stay another day. The A/C in the boat stopped working on and off which would have been a fiasco! Barry checked the filters and we pulled out loads of seaweed, shells, etc. and that fixed the problem.
