CRUISE Day 6 - Wednesday, July 24, 2002
We headed off from Singer Island, North Palm Beach at 11:00 am
after a bit of a rainfall. There was a quaint and very “eclectic” little floating house just about a mile from the Marina – very interesting indeed, something like a floating “Sanford & Sons”! There are several bridges along the way, all approximately 15’ clearance – our boat is about 13’ from the water to the top of the light, and so we didn’t have to request a bridge opening very often. Most are “open on command” but there are a few where you need to wait for an opening every 15 minutes. There were HUGE, awesome houses along the way with most “new construction” being multi-million dollar homes – these people have way too much money! An interesting observation is that most of these homes do
NOT have pools, very strange and very different from Cape Coral. Also interesting is that scattered in and among these monster homes are a few small,
average to above-average homes and condos. The seawalls are also very different from Cape Coral – looks like pillars holding up the seawall. We saw a couple of young lads in the water scraping barnacles off the seawalls – must be a new type of summer job “barnacle picking”! We passed by a small inlet that was designated as a “Manatee sanctuary”. We finally docked at a place in
Lighthouse Point, Florida… at the “Lighthouse Point Marina”, how appropriate around
5:30 pm. It was a relatively new spot with new facilities but a little on the pricey side. We took a water taxi over to a famous little restaurant that night just across the canal called “Cap’s Place”. It was originally called Club Unique in the 1930’s and was a popular supper and gambling club during the Prohibition times where the likes of Al Capone would frequently visit it. Cap would pick up whiskey in the Bahamas and smuggle it easily back to Lighthouse Point. He would tie the liquor to buoys and sink them, so when a customer ordered a bottle, he would just row out to the buoy and retrieve the bottle… crafty Salty old dog that he was. Cap’s Place has a personality all it’s own and well worth the short water taxi ride – food is great too! Salty got into a little bit of a “scrap” on the dock on Thursday morning with a yappy little fluffy dog – guess he thought he
was a rough and ready sailor being on the boat all this time! After that, we decided we better head on out before we got into any
more trouble!
