Dock Master doing rounds

Day 21 - 23, July 7th to July 9th

This was pretty much a nothing kind of day where we did exactly that - nothing. It took me all morning to do laundry - only 2 loads but there are only 2 machines and everyone must have had the same idea. Barry spent a couple of hours trying to figure out where we will go next, when and if we could get reservations. He phoned a few places and we are in "tentatively" so we'll see what happens. We also need to wait and see what happens with Hurricane Dennis and what affect that will have on our plans. It's looking like we should be back to Miami around July 23rd. The wireless internet connection isn't working all that well and we can't get connected when in we are on the boat so I'll have to bring the laptop over closer to the office if I want to send or check emails. We have new dock mates from Cape Coral no less! They are on a 41' Meridian called "V.O. Gar" which stands for "Seagram's V.O. Rye" and "ciGAR" and aside from Cathy; those two things are among Paul's favorite things. Paul and Cathy, Barry and I sat up in the Gazebo overlooking the inner Sampson Bay where we crossed "the great divide" the other day and almost got stranded. I was checking and sending emails, we were all having a cocktails and discussing how windy it was and wondering how windy it was going to get. Apparently, we'll have 30 mph winds over the next couple of days so needless to say, we are thankful we are where we are. We are supposed to be here until Monday and that will give Hurricane Dennis plenty of time to be up the Gulf of Mexico and therefore, will have no affect on us at all anymore. We ordered dinner from the Restaurant and brought it back to the boat just as the skies opened and the torrential rains began, although the rain didn't last long and just gave way to more wind. Again, the restaurant has no fish! Apparently, they just can't get anyone to go out and get any for them and they tell us that really doesn't happen until August - can't figure that one out, but oh well. In between watching a movie, Barry was reading his email from Jeanne telling him there was a contract on the condo listing we just put in a week or so ago and then he was on the cell phone to the seller advising her what he thought she should do. So, you see, he is still working!

Day 22, Friday, July 8th It's only a little overcast today but the wind is definitely out there. We looked out to see what we thought was the Coast Guard very close to the Marina but found out later that it was really a small oil barge "Tropical Breeze" fueling Sampson Cay up with gas and oil. Jeanne emailed the Contract on the condo to Barry, he printed it out (yes, he bought a printer for the boat) and he'll discuss it with both the seller and Jeanne to see where this will go. The boats in the Marina are busy beefing up lines and fenders just in case the wind really does kick up - better safe than sorry and if you know Barry, he's got fenders galore and big ones too! The dock master made the decision to allow boats to dock at the fuel dock because it was more important that a boat be here in safety than out in the wind and weather and no one would be going out and needing gas anyway. All three of us went for a long walk to yet another beach on this side of the Island and climbed up to the highest hill where you can see the Marina and water all around us - rough water at that. Pictures don't do the rough water justice but believe me, I'd rather be up on the hill looking at it than out in it! It's funny, water seems to be like a magnet for Salty because as soon as he sees it or hears it, he charges full bore to get in it. Of course sand and dirt have the same affect and when you mix the two he's not a pretty sight, so when we got back to the boat it was shampoo time for the Saltmaster. He does love the water but when you mix shampoo with it, he really does not like it for some reason. We, along with so many others were forced to be "on land" and milling around the Marina (it was a good day at the bar so they tell me) and Salty is allowed to be off leash as he's the only dog around (and perfectly behaved I might add). People were always wanting to pet him - putting their hands out to him and calling him over but he would have no part of that at all….he's got his "hands-off" policy going on again. Dinner on board and movies again tonight!
